Here’s something a little different! This rare, traditional sweet wine is made from native Visciola cherries grown on the Lucchetti farm. The Visciola cherry here in the Marche is a variety of wild sour cherry: darker and smaller than the usual sour cherries or Amarena that are much more famous. The cherries are hand harvested, and half of them are left out to dry in the sun for 40 days. They are fermented in a base wine of Lacrima and a ripasso technique is used to induce fermentation. The wine ends up at 14% alcohol, with some of the cherry’s residual sugar offsetting the sour, tart, tangy flavor profile. Absolutely delicious and a favorite of Ryan’s when he can find it, this shows off dark aromas of brandied black cherries, wet stone and dark chocolate. Enjoy this on its own or as a supreme chocolate pairing. You’ll love it!
