90% Aglianico del Taburno, with the rest a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. The fruit comes from clayey and calcareous marl on hillsides from 650’ to 2100’ elevation. Hand harvested, destemmed and fermented with an intense maceration of the skins. Malolactic fermentation follows in traditional oak casks and in second and third use barriques.
This is a medium bodied but powerful expression of Aglianico that pours an inky dark blackish red color. Blackberry, cassis, plum, tobacco, coffee, chocolate and pepper notes on both the nose and palate. Plump and savory on the palate, with plenty of Aglianico tannin without going to the extreme on astringency. Enjoy with rich foods and red meat.
Cantina del Taburno, located on the slopes of Mount Taburno, belongs to the “Consorzio Agrario di Benevento” (Agricultural Consortium of Benevento). The Consortium was established in 1901, and it had an extremely important role in the development of agriculture in the Sannio area. The winery was built in 1972 in Foglianise. This impressive cooperative consists of over 300 growers with 1500 acres under vine in the towns standing on the slopes of Mount Taburno: Foglianise, Torrecuso, Vitulano, Campoli del Monte Taburno, Castelpoto, Apollosa, Bonea, Montesarchio, Ponte, Tocco Caudio, Paupisi and Benevento. The hills with clay and calcareous marl soils, the mild winters with regular rainfall between October and March, the dry and warms summers all concur to create extremely favorable conditions for high quality viticulture.
