80% Nebbiolo, 10% Vespolina, 10% Croatina; all farmed sustainably. Bramaterra is a little known DOC in Alto Piemonte (northeastern Piedmont), northwest of Gattinara and Ghemme. Once renowned for its wines, it was almost entirely wiped out by phlloxera. Hand harvested and cofermented with native yeasts. Aged in large Austrian oak casks for 18 months. 12,5% alcohol. Only 990 bottles made. This delicate and elegant expression of Nebbiolo shows off notes of red cherry, violets, dried roses, woodsmoke, orange peel, black pepper, mushrooms and earth. Medium bodied, with tangy acidity and fine but grippy tannins in perfect balance, with a long, complex, ever-changing finish. Decant to show its best now or age for 15+ years.
92 points, John Gilman's View From The Cellar. "The 2017 Bramaterra “Gervasio” from Cantina Gaggiano is composed from a cépages of eighty percent Nebbiolo and ten percent each of Vespolina and Croatina. The vines are farmed without chemical products, hand-harvested and the three varieties are generally harvested at the same time and co-fermented. Elevage is in large botti for eighteen months prior to assemblage prior to bottling. The 2017 comes in at a svelte 12.5 percent alcohol and offers up a beautifully refined bouquet of cherries, gamebird, complex soil tones, woodsmoke, brown spices and a topnote of dried roses. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and tangy, with a good core, excellent transparency and grip, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and beautifully balanced finish. This is excellent young Bramaterra! 2027-2050."
